Socioeconomic background:

Low Income Levels: Most slum dwellers work in the informal sector (e.g., daily wage labourers, street vendors) with irregular and low income.

Poor Housing Conditions: Slums typically consist of temporary or semi-permanent structures with inadequate access to sanitation and clean water.

High Population Density: Overcrowding is common, leading to limited living space and strained infrastructure.

Limited Access to Education: Many children drop out early due to financial constraints, leading to lower literacy rates.

Inadequate Health Facilities: Lack of access to proper healthcare leads to vulnerability to diseases and poor health outcomes.

Unemployment and Underemployment: Many residents are either unemployed or work in unstable, low-paying jobs without benefits.

Child Marriage/ child labour: Despite awareness campaigns child marriage / child labour continues to be concern in Visakhapatnam.

Migration Patterns: Many residents are migrants from rural areas seeking employment in the urban.

Dependence on Public Services: Slum communities heavily rely on government schemes for housing, food, and healthcare.

Children and Women Vulnerability: Women and children are more vulnerable to exploitation, Sex abuse, Cyber-Crime, drugs and alcohol, malnutrition, and lack of education.

Prevention Program:
- An awareness program on children's rights, human trafficking and exploitation, and the safe use of social media was conducted three times a month for children, adolescents, youth, and women in schools, hostels, and vulnerable communities
- We provide legal aid, counselling and other rehabilitation services to the children and women who are sexually abused and exploited in the vulnerable communities.
- The adolescent girls were sent to St. Joseph’s community college for computer and tailoring courses and they benefited.
- We also provide them education through after- school program and nutritious snacks to the children.
After-school program:
- The after-school program was conducted in 4 community centres namely Vambay Colony, Seva Nagar, Bheemili and Amaravathi Colony where vulnerable children are coming to learn.
- Extra-curricular activities and counselling are conducted in the after-school program.
- Awareness on environment, health, and hygiene programs was also organized along with their parents.
Scholarship program to the students:
- Some vulnerable communities identified the dropouts and helped them to write the open school exams.
- The children received financial assistance to pay school fees partially.
Counselling sessions:
- Regular counselling sessions were organized for women and girl children who were victims of violence. The therapeutic techniques that used such as art therapy, storytelling, and peer support groups.
Providing medical support.
- Medical support to individuals who are sick, especially those from vulnerable and low-income backgrounds.
Skill Training Programme for the dropouts and women who in the vulnerable communities:
- We conduct 3 months tailoring certified course to the young girls and women in the vulnerable communities of Bheemili, Vambay Colony, Seva Nagar, K1 Colony and Amaravathi Colony.
- We have successfully completed 7 batches and have issued certificates and the next batch will be starting from the month of June 2025.
- The girls and the women who are learnt tailoring skill, some are having their own machine and earning. Few are going to work in the shop and getting good payment. Tailoring skills are helping them support their livelihood.
- As part of the educational program, we continued to support the children during the summer vacation by organizing a 10-day summer camp in three vulnerable communities: Marikavalasa, Vambay Colony, and Amaravathi Colony. Each canter hosted between 50 to 60 children aged 9 to 18.
- The camp provided an opportunity for children to develop various skills, including memory enhancement, yoga and meditation, mental wellness, soft skills, creative learning methods, and empowerment sessions.
- The children, along with their parents and local leaders, were cooperative and supportive, and they warmly welcomed our services in their respective areas.
Impact:
- The Prevention Programme against human trafficking raised awareness among children about children's rights, the POCSO Act, cybercrime, NCPCR, and the JJ Act.
- The identification of issues among vulnerable communities helped address these problems and prevent child marriage, sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, domestic violence, and child labour.
- The communities became more vigilant to communicate the issues and receive help such as legal aid, counselling, education, and to get medical care.
- Education has a big impact on children. It helped to improve their critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Education reduced the risk of child labour and early marriage, especially for girls. It also helped to improve gender equality.
- Individual and group counselling helped them to resolve their past wounds and bring healing.
- Group therapy session on mental wellness also brought understanding, emotional stability, to engage them in healthy habits and resolve conflicts in a healthy ways and to build resilience among them.
- Vocational skill training programme helped vulnerable women learn and stabilize their skills for sustainable livelihood.
